CCCC Phase 1: Distributed Computing

The Combined Community Charity Challenge has been launched!

This year, we decided to up the ante, and face off against THREE other subreddits: /r/adventuretime, /r/harrypotter, AND/r/thelastairbender. This year, the event will be fandom-wide. Tumblr, Deviantart, Youtube, conventions, fan sites, and even real-life advertisements anywhere and everywhere are strongly encouraged to make this the largest competition the fandom has ever seen!

The first phase of the four-part project aims to support the Rosetta@Home project.

Phase 1 involves distributed computing. We’re going to be utilizing Rosetta@Home, which is a project that uses spare computational power to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. By running Rosetta@home you help researchers efforts at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer’s.

The last phase is titled “Charity.” I remember that last year the participating fandoms were supporting Engineers Without Borders and Doctors Without Borders, but this year’s setup will probably only be announced shortly before the launch of phase 4 on January 5, 2014.
