Repent. But seriously, I wonder whether they’ll actually try and restore the status quo…

    • MorphineDream

Yes, because hitting the reset button is SUCH a fantastic narrative tool it became a running joke over in the Trek fandom. Half the crew converted to energy based lizards? All back to normal by the end. Main character suffers a tragic, character building loss? Hey, what’s this big History Eraser button? Poorly defined time travel device to the rescue!

That’s the worst thing about obsessive fandoms, the resistance or outright fear of change.

  • Seraphem

We’ll see. Though from the sounds of it, this won’t actually change much beyond giving Twi some more things to learn to deal with. Seems she’ll still live in Ponyville and try to be herself.

    • Fans love seeing Twilight have nervous breakdowns, and yet they’re complaining about seeing Twilight try and run a country? Yeah, they’re worrying for nothing.

    • Applepie

      That will be interesting.

      • Applepie

Imagine Alicorn Twilight go Lesson Zero.

        • Marko Vinu

Now that is a great idea!

  • Predelnik

Reading about new toys scares me a little, was that guy at reddit really 100% right? then it’s pretty sad afterall…

    • Anonymous

I doubt the reditt guy worked on the show at all. All of the info in the rumor was already being discussed before the rumor had surfaced. The image of alicorn Twilight appeared well before the rumor. The only info that would have been unknown was the ambiguous worse thing that will supposedly happen in season 4. One has to question why the reddit poster didnt specify what it was. He/she had already broken the NDA why stop there. I think its most likely because it was someone weaving previously established info into one rumor putting it in a negative light. The sad thing is people fell for it and are still falling for it.

  • Nooooooooooooo
    Aaaaaaaahhh
    Noooo
    Why

  • Jon the Red

I saw the picture on MLP’s Facebook wall and laughed so hard because I knew what comes next.

  • I am really wondering why the basically show this before the episode. Shouldn’t this be a surprise? Oh well, seems like all the cry babies were wrong and Twilight wont leave her friends ;)

  • Anonymous

Let’s not worry yet. People didn’t like Cadance either. (I didn’t even like her) It all depends on how it’s done. Sure this makes me unhappy, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

    • Anonymous

Some of us still don’t like Cadance. Or Shining Armor. Or The Crystal Empire. At all. For those of us who feel every new creative decision since season 2 has fallen flat, this news is worrisome.

  • TailsFox88

I really can’t wait for this episode. Not because I’m excited to see Twilight become an Alicorn, but rather just so that all the people who think this will ruin everything will realize that, yes, the show actually can continue despite this change. I mean, the writers were really able to take a premise as stupid as a “Royal Wedding” from Hasbro and make something amazing from it. Do you really have so little faith in them that they can’t do the same with an Alicorn Twilight?

  • Predelnik

Well the thing that worries me it’s not particularly this case but the fact that maybe all of this stuff with Hasbro doing seemingly unpopular and unwise decisions is somehow connected to Lauren’s and others’ leave, and that maybe they really treating their gold mine wrong way and trying to get out of it more than it gives to them, and you could guess where it will lead the show to, eventually. Hope I totally damn wrong here though, don’t wanna be a downer. As long as there are still so many awesome guys involved with the show I’m gonna watch it and wait for what happens next.

  • Seraphem

Lauren’s leaving has been covered to death, It had nothing to do with Hasbro, and everything to do with her simply being overworked. And I really don’t see this being a marketing driven thing. It seems like something the WRITERS came up with, and Hasbro is just using based on that. If it was Marketing driven, we would have had Twilacorn stuff in stores by now and it would have been a much much bigger deal then just a few weeks before it aired.

  • Predelnik

Don’t wanna go much into discussion about Lauren’s leave but I’ve actually seen some pictures of Twilight as alicorn before, most of the deal about Hasbro’s decision of course came from some random guy on reddit who said that he’s working on the show, which you can hardly trust. But still seeing how unpopular this decision is, it’s really hard to think that it came from writers and also that line about new toys on the linked article kinda gives a hint too. Though I won’t deny it, it still can work out pretty well afterall.

  • Seraphem

This has been something that could be seen as being built up to since the start. They might have been pushed to speed it up a bit. But this feels like a natural progression. And further more, who cares what hasbro does? really? So far the writers have shown they can take pretty much ANYTHING and turn it into an amazing story. So why be worried now?

    • PCP2443

Agreed, if there was any editorial mandating from Hasbro it was probably just to speed her Alicornification up so they could get their next wave of toys out. Twilights been shown to be “Special” from the start, she’s the series Rodimus Prime so to speak. Although I will be disappointed if they don’t use an instrumental version of “The Touch” during her transformation XD.

But yeah i’ll go into the finale with cautious optimism. Although I do fear like Magic Duel will feel like a really rushed episode.

Speaking of which who thinks if theres a season 4 Trixie will come back to take Twy’s old spot..I mean we can’t have Rarity be the ONLY unicorn in the mane cast… that would just mess with too many peoples OCD *mine included*

    • Anonymous

“So far the writers have shown they can take pretty much ANYTHING and turn it into an amazing story.”

Uh. No they havent. Every time they have picked up an uninteresting or just plain dumb premise, they have dropped the ball.
Hasbro got greedy and wrestled away control, damning the series. It would take a truly great writing team to recover from the damage hasbro does, and unfortunately, the mlp writing team is just okay.

  • Marko Vinu

Knowing Larson, finale is going to be awesome and S4 will be epic.

    • Anonymous

Larson is not that great. He uses the lack of continuity in the show’s story to create characters just dumb and out of character enough to fit the idea he wants to work with.
Putting him in charge of a show changing episode is asking for trouble, I can already see derpy dropping the latest shipments of idiotballs on the mane 6.

  • Anonymous

So far, the whole episode has been sounding like whatever happens gets fixed at the end.

“When Twilight casts a spell that switches the Cutie Marks and destinies, the only way to reverse the spell is by writing her own magic.”

Chances are this alicorn thing is a one-off that will get resolved all within the episode.
    I believe in MA Larson.

    • Predelnik

Yeah if it would happen that way, that would be a relief pretty much and prove my worrying totally wrong.

    • Anonymous

If the magic switch accident were the blame for all of this, then why in the hell would they have a coronation? Why would there be an entire mythology created around the princesses just so twilight could restore the status quo after 20 minutes?

nothing about this assumption is based in logic or reasoning. everything about the coming events point to this being a permanent change to twilight.
Its dumb, we all know it, but its happening, so you might as well just get used to it.

      • Anonymous

The “coronation” the Hub and Hasbro is plugging is not related to the show at all.
It’s some party contest that’s held on the day of the episode.

        • To note there was a press release from The Hub yesterday, there’s a marathon going on the day of the finale.

      • Jon the Red

It’s perfectly possible that creating some sort of “harmony spell” is going to prove beyond any doubt to Celestia that Twilight Sparkle is ready to ascend to a position of power.

    • Anonymous

Well, if the little story description from DVD Planet is correct, it isn’t a spell, it’s “Princess Cadance who inducts Twilight into royalty.” But we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • Seraphem

No it makes it seem like that accident happens. And her “creating her own magic” to fix it is the final test before being ascended.

  • Spazz

    • Marko Vinu

Stupid dog, you make me look bad!

  • I look forward to what this could bring.

  • Totally not paranoid

As much as I believe in M A Larson and his ability to create myth, I am of the opinion that the Luna episode would have been better had he not been told to rewrite her character. In other words, I believe that meddling can result in substandard quality where exceptional quality would be expected.

    • You mean Luna Eclipsed? The episode everyone loves and voted the #1 episode of the entire show? THAT Luna episode?

      • Marko Vinu

        +1

    • Anonymous

What character? she really didn’t have one other that the back-story which was unchanged. She only had two lines before Luna Eclipsed.

    • MorphineDream

This is what I meant about some bronies being trapped in head canon.

So, did men in black helicopters show up at Larson’s house? They probably had him forge Obama’s birth certificate, too.

      Oooooo, conspiracies!

      It’s a cartoon. It’s an effing cartoon.

  • BronyDash925

It’s like the “whiners” in this fandom feel like they are entitled to something. Like Hasbro has to come to them for their permission on how to run their show. As much as I’d like Hasbro to give Bronies more freedom… THIS ISN’T OUR SHOW. We’re fans who either watch it on TV or do fan films/fan art… or both. That’s all. It’s not a culture, it’s not a “movement”… it’s sparked creativity, and it’s made some friendships in the process.

  • shadow00

the head writer just said they not chaniging her personality or where she lives or her friends they just change her design

  • Annon

It really does make sense when you think about it. Luna is the night, Celestia is…sun..day…you know. And then Twilight is one of the transitions in between. Her element is a tiara and she’s very powerful when it comes to magic. Little points like that kinda add up to the possibility (but now a certainty) that she could become a princess. Personally, I’d like to see her remain a unicorn, but I wont die or cry when she gets her wings. And who knows, maybe it’ll work out for the better for the main six as well. I can’t see Twilight leaving all of her friends behind, so maybe they follow her (to Canterlot?) wherever she ends up.

Twilight’s change isn’t troubling to me without a context to put it in– It could be handled well or not, it depends on what the writers do with the story. Hasbro has always been directly involved with the show’s development, so the company continuing to play that role isn’t troubling, either– That’s how things are, nothing new to see. However, I do think that there’s been a change in Hasbro’s approach to the show– In recent commentary to investors Hasbro noted that it was cutting back on production, because it believed that it could make the same money producing fewer episodes. That wasn’t an offhand statement, that’s exactly what the company did. So, when Donna Tobin, MLP’s brand marketing director says, by way of the quoted EW article:

/ Our major objective [is] to completely sync entertainment and our toy line,” says Tobin, noting that Hasbro and My Little Pony‘s overseers regularly discuss “story arching, how that works from an entertainment perspective, and also how it works for our core line and our brand development.” /

I have to conclude that they know that the show and toys are markedly different from one another and that they intend to change this. I’m an optimistic person by nature, but I can’t say that this sounds like the toys will become more like the show– That’s possible, but not likely.

That said, I have to play the Devil’s advocate and note that it’s also possible that Tobin stated what was already the case and that Twilight becoming an alicorn was a product of Hasbro and DHX’s existing relationship. If that’s so, then the show will continue to be its own thing and the toys will continue to be their own thing, and that will be okay. That’s the outcome I’m hoping for, but I have to say that FiM struck me as a fragile thing from the beginning, and that it was only a matter of time before Hasbro realized it was doing something awesome and rushed to stop it.

I’d like to be proven wrong there, but– We’ll see.

Speaking of context, I’d like to contrast Meghan McCarthy’s comment about every girl wanting to be a princess with what Lauren Faust said about the show back in 2010:

“There are lots of different ways to be a girl. You can be sweet and shy, or bold and physical. You can be silly and friendly, or reserved and studious. You can be strong and hard working, or artistic and beautiful. This show is wonderfully free of “token girl” syndrome, so there is no pressure to shove all the ideals of what we want our daughters to be into one package. There is a diversity of personalities, ambitions, talents, strengths and even flaws in our characters–it’s not an army of cookie-cutter nice-girls or cookie-cutter beauty queens like you see in most shows for girls.”

I’m not doing this to cast aspersions on McCarthy. I understand that Hasbro is driving this bus. I do think that Faust’s message is important, that the writers at DHX believe so as well, and that Hasbro couldn’t care less, as long as toys are sold and money is made.

  • Thistledown

Last comment, for now! I thought McCarthy’s tweet about the princess quote was funny:

    Meghan McCarthy ‏@MMeghanMcCarthy
Clarification: When I said “every girl wants to be a princess” I was thinking of the princess I wanted to be growing up: Princess Leia.

I trust the folks at DHX. Hasbro– not so much so.
