From Mane6’s website:

Hey everyone!

We have good news and bad news.

First, the bad news: We’ve tried a few different ways of talking to Hasbro about getting special permission to continue the game, but it seems that is officially a dead end, and it’s time for us to move on.

The good news is that the game is not dead! Some even gooder news is that we have a new member in the Mane6 family…

We’d like you all to warmly welcome Lauren Faust to the team:

Hey folks! I’m so super psyched to be a part of this! I hope I can do my little part to help Mane6 finish up this game in a way that stays true to the spirit of the original—but in a way that can freely be shared! I hope you like what we come up with. -LF

She’ll be working with us (or is that the other way around?) to create all new characters for Fighting is Magic. Yes, we know what you’re thinking, and yes, she is pretty kickass.

So what does this all mean? It means that with Lauren’s help, we are going to finish this game, but it will no longer be based on the MLP franchise. It will be all new characters in a new setting, while keeping the moves, mechanics, and style of the game we wanted to make from the start. This means a lot of work for us, and a bunch of new challenges, but we’re excited about the possibilities that come along with them.

We are still in the early concept stage and can’t wait to update everyone on what we come up with together. We will provide plenty of opportunities for you guys to get to know the characters and their world.

We know you guys will have a lot of questions, we’ll do our best to answer them, but at this early stage some might be a bit hard to tackle.

Thanks for sticking around for the ride. <3
—Mane6 team.

On the one hand, it’s a bit sad they weren’t able to continue with the pony version, but I’m looking forward to what Lauren Faust can bring to the project just as much; considering their release says they’re keeping the movesets, I don’t think it’s the Galaxy Girls, but we’ll see.

  • could you make this game REALLY easy to mod?

    • greybrother

That is a supremely good question……

  • Trixie

If you guys make the game different then put out all of your ponies as a mod Hasbro can do NOTHING! So continue to make it, and your pony models and move sets. Then when the game is put out wait about a week then BAM! Release the mod. You will be under no copy right violations! Do it.

    • Malanaks

I think it’s one of those things where they want to do what is right. Making a ponies mod available would be cool, yes, but releasing one almost with the game as you suggested is sort of a “f*** you” to Hasbro, which i doubt mlp fans would approve of, even if they are throwing us through a loop.

      • TA

At this stage, I really could get behind a big “f*** you, Hasbro”
Still a brony, not so happy with the corporate entity…

        • ancapbrony

          here here

      • Mark

… I’m almost certain that the majority of the Bronies will be behind the idea of saying “F*** YOU” to Hasbro.

      • anonnona

… I don’t see the problem with the fuck you to Hasbro, and I’m not the only one, we all wanted the goddamn game to feature our favorite ponies.
I approve 100% the idea of them finishing the game and releasing a mod later

    • Blayze Kohime

To avoid legal issues, I think it would have to be a separate group/person that released the mod.

  • I

I agree with the others, Hasbro can NOT do a thing if the mods are MLP and for those who are not a huge fan of all the modding stuff PLEASE make it easy, I would love to mod the game and especially with the MLP mods but I wouldn’t know where to start first as to modding but if MLP is involved then I would love to earn how as long as it is easy.

And thank you Lauren for saving this game! Yes, I know that it isn’t in the way we MLP fans wanted but at least we now have Lauren on board so we can get through this and get a game out of it even if it does mean just having MLP mods.

  • Darklurkr23

That would be awesome if it was Galaxy Girls. She was trying to get someone to pick that up wasn’t she? XD

  • Jon the Red

Hey, before we yammer on about having a MLP mod and being a jerk like that, let’s get the game finished. It’s a really solid fighter with intuitive mechanics and excellent flow, and that’s the important part.

  • Bubblegum

It’s a shame it’s no longer a MLP fan game anymore ( and I still don’t forgive Hasbro’s legal team)…but wow! A fighting game with original Lauren Faust characters! It doesn’t get any better then that! It many ways, it only makes the project even more interesting! :)

  • Doc

Some Anon figured out how to unlock FM2K files, so it’d just be a matter of time if they released the assets.

  • JeffKingofGravy

I don’t think we should be encouraging such a direct affront to Hasbro just yet. While I am certainly no fan of theirs, I do not want to encourage anything that would involve backlash that could harm us. I we do something like that to spite Hasbro, I imagine their view of bronies would not be encouraged and their desire to continue to make little references to our culture will be lessened. I, like Bubblegum, believe that simply the idea of a fighting game with Lauren Fausts characters will be incredible. Why do we need to be rude to Hasbro if we can have our own queen on our side? That is not what we stand for. If we are to exemplify the Elements of Harmony, we need to show all of them, and giving Hasbro the f*** you is certainly not kindness.

  • Shiek927

Ughh, I don’t know….I’m happy for them – I’m happy they get to continue working…but the whole point was for this to be an MLP game. As interesting as it would be to have original designs for the game, it kind of defeats the point.

On the other hand, as others have said, Mods can be made to easily make the game, well, as it originally looked, which probably would be allowed…so this is good news after all :).

  • ManeFlame

I’m willing to give it a go if it’s Galaxy Girls, but other than that I don’t care about the game anymore if it’s not going to be MLP. Or at least till the MLP “mod” comes out.

  • Are you still using the Chinese engine because if you are thank you because i know how to mod that engine or will you be changing?

  • DaScribbler

    I am hype.
Lauren is the most badass person ever, when I saw her tweet at the Mane6 I was extremely happy.

  • WinterSpeed

Meh, that’s really cool they got Lauren but still I was really hyped for this because it was an MLP game. I’m not really gonna download it unless it has a mod ( although that seems a bit risky )
