Amy Keating Rogers has been granted author rights on Equestria Daily and posted a letter including her original lyrics of the Smile Song, as she sung it twice at BronyCon last weekend. Read it below.

Hey Everypony!

This is Amy Keating Rogers. There has been a request for my original lyrics to the “Smile Song.”  I’ve put them at the end of this post.

By looking at them, you can see how Daniel took my lyrics, tweaked them, and built upon them to make the amazing “Smile, Smile, Smile” that’s in “A Friend in Deed.”

And I just want you all to know that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Daniel Ingram’s version.  I think it is uplifting and fun and shows how magical a song can become when given to a talented composer.  It’s a perfect Pinkie Pie song.  And I was lucky enough to hear it sung twice by the huge BronyCon crowd last weekend!
In my writing process, when I’m told that there’s a song in my episode, I get REALLY excited because I desperately wish that I had the talent to write music!  I wrote my first song when I was 8 years old.  However, I fear that my musical composing talent has stayed at my 8 year old level!  (I was no Mozart.)

When I get a song, I dive into it 100%.  Now, if I can find an existing song to base my song off of, that’s always better.  For instance, I had “Ever After” from “Into the Woods” in my head for “At the Gala.”

But for “Smile” I came up with my own tune.  After I come up with the music and the lyrics for any song, I always make a scratch track of me singing it so folks will know how I hear it.

Turns out, I’m the only writer that did this!  I’m such a goofball!  All the other writers do the lyrics, of course, but they don’t do a scratch track.  I thought that was what we were supposed to do.  Whoops!  But since my dream is to be a musical composer, it was fun for me.

The funny thing is, Daniel never got my version of “Smile.”  (Probably a good thing!)  Instead, he did his version off my note in the script that the song should have a happy, upbeat feel like “It’s a Sunshine Day” from The Brady Bunch.

And, as Pinkie would say, he “Nailed it!”

Still, I thought it would be fun for the fans to hear my original version.  A BronyCon Easter Egg!  And thanks to the Everfree Radio Live Stream and YouTube, it’s an Easter Egg for everypony!

As you heard, my version had a patter section that was cut.  In there, I mention a couple ponies’ names.  I said that Twist’s mom is named Shimmy Shake.  This isn’t canon.  I just made this up.  I thought that since The Twist is a dance, it would be cute if Twist’s mom had a dance name too!

And then there’s Derpy Doo.  I’ve read about fans getting riled up because her last name isn’t Hooves.  Please don’t get upset.  Don’t worry about pieces of a script that got cut.  The fact is, I didn’t know Derpy’s last name.  If I had, I would have written the line differently.

Derpy Hooves is the fans’ creation!  You all gave her life!  So much so, she’s now an official toy for Comic Con!  How awesome is that?

Anyhow, I’ve written something way too long again.  I hope you enjoy my lyrics and my version of the song.  Thanks for being the Best Fans Ever!

See the lyrics and recordings after the break.
