SIGINT is not only a strategy of the intelligence community and the signal sent when you hit Ctrl+C, but also a renowned conference on sociopolitical demands and utopias, hacktivism, creative violation of norms, and geeky fun in general. This year’s SIGINT12 in Cologne, Germany, is still in full swing (May 18 to 20), but for many of us the 1:45 h “lecture” on ponies and dragons, trolls and fluffiness has just possibly been the highlight of the event.

To the best of my knowledge, an official recording of the event has not yet been uploaded, but they provided a livestream, which I recorded. You can download the recording here, but it is not seekable and probably contains some padding at the beginning.

The panelists, all pony experts from a well-known German podcast, are (left to right) Sofakissen, Jella, MapMad Malik, and Tenkoman a.k.a. Gerjet a.k.a. Weatherhoof. (Weatherhoof is also one of the organizers of the German Galacon convention.) They introduced the surprisingly partially oblivious audience to the world of pone, and apart from the obligatory history (complete with G1–G3.5 and /co/) and different explanations of the allure of the show, they also touched on the prominent role of feminism, the subversion of clichéd gender roles, possible reasons for the occasional pony hate, and the chemical properties of cider. For a few seconds it even seemed like Weatherhoof might revisit his rant about the lacking appreciation of the German community for the German dub, but it didn’t come to that. Cool hat, by the way.
