Last evening over on the EqD an indie project was announced dubbed The Brony Thank You Project. The general concept of the project is the funding of a 30 second commercial that would air on The Hub from the general pony community, thanking the fine folks at DHX Media, Top Draw Studio and of course Hasbro for the great show they have put on. The commercial itself would be clips of community members reading a thank you message. The project itself needed $2000 USD for a one time airing, but at the time of me writing this article has garnished $10,230 USD once again proving this fandom has too much disposable income. The Indiegogo fund raiser page can be found here.

Needless to say the project has had mixed reviews from the community as many people feel that its a bad idea in general. I do understand the concept of thanking these guys for their work and dedication to a show that was originally a 22 minute commercial back in the 1980s, I’m sure none of them expected a mass following of adultish people but seem to be happy with us. But in general many feel that the money that is going into this project would be more useful towards a charity, such as Madeline Peters’ (Scootaloo) Art for Africa project that also receive pledges of over $10,000 USD last weekend. You know its serious business when /co/’s MLPG crowd AND Ponychan agree the idea is bad (these two groups have a tradition of not getting along and never agreeing on anything, so I’m waiting for the rift in time and space to open up and destroy us all). Someone has even started a petition against it.

Along with the negative vibes behind the project, some are questioning if anything about this project is a fact, or is it one giant scam. The individual behind the project happens to be a frequent visitor to my local irc channel and I can say that I trust the guy enough to know that this is not a scam. The person has spoke with The Hub and been given permission to run the project (which in turn would equate to The Hub asking Hasbro if its alright if they did this). The general concept of the commercial itself as said above is multiple individuals who will be reading a thank you letter, and its been expressed that the project organizer wishes to find what I would dub “upright” citizens, such as a fireman or even a soldier who has served his/her country in Afghanistan. Since the project now has five times the amount original requested, the commercial will get multiple airings on the Hub, as the $2000 USD deal was for a one time shot, and at a discount thanks to The Hub. As of this morning it also seems that William Anderson (background composer for the show) has agreed to score the background music for the commercial, though noted that its kind of weird to score music for something that is basically thanking him.

[Editor’s Opinion]

Last night I tossed up a poll about this, and at the moment it seems the majority of the community that passes through DHN does feel its a good idea. As for myself, I can say that I’m not overly a fan of the general concept. If we are actually going to make a commercial, I’d rather see it highlight the good this community has done, namely the sheer volume of money people have donated towards charities, rather than thanking DHX. Not saying that DHX does not deserve thanks, but some other groups have been coming up with good ideas on how to thank the people. A good example is Chef Sandy and Apple Cider from Bronyville, who are currently arranging a Thank You Breakfast for the DHX staff. Nothing says thanks more than free food, especially breakfast. Though in general I will wish the project luck, and spray that its not a 30 second spaghetti commercial.

Apparently even reddit thinks it’s a terrible idea

    • I know ponygoons feel the same, in a more neutral manor

  • anun

Concerned soccer moms will be watching.

Guess what happens when they find out that their little girl has similar interests to several million adult male strangers?

Emergency pedophile protection protocols engaged; no more pony for you.

just this one time i wish there was a “like” feature, because I would totally like this reply

I already voted yes. I don’t think it’s a terrible idea, but it’s not the greatest. The poll needs more options to zero in.

  • I am skeptical about this project. Who determines the content and how will it represent the community? Done poorly, it’ll be disaster, and there are other ways to show gratitude which doesn’t have the same risks associated with it.

Oh, and I guess you’ve missed this on the Twitters: https://twitter.com/#!/TheRealSibsy/status/197400640195010560/photo/1

    • Yeah but only because I was outside enjoying the nice weather. I knew about the bits from Final, that was definitely an awesome idea.

      • Outside you say? I was outside once. It was awful.

Holy fucking shit this is a HORRIBLE idea. Reading through the indiegogo page, its clear this has less to do with thanking the show creators and more to do with creating some public image for the brony community. Hell, the motivation section explicitly says so. Then there’s the proposed wording of the ad:

“We are the bronies, and we want to say thank you […] And to Lauren Faust and all the writers, who imagined a world that we’d all love to live in. We are the bronies, come join the herd.”

Seriously guys? This reads like an ad for the community.

I think it’s a fucking stupid idea, and clearly the intent is more about congratulating the fanbase than congratulating the show staff. I’m terrified at what the final result is going to be, if and when it goes to air.

How about instead of raising $2,000 to fund a commercial, the community gets together to raise a $5,000,000 bribe for Hasbro to continue funding the show’s production after season 3?

    • They already got over $10000. They’re just going to use that to run the ad several times. There are better things to do with the money though.

  • You people are the most pessimistic group of people I have ever seen. That “script” was just a concept he spat out at the moment he wrote the post. It is in no way the way the commercial will go.

How about you go back to being ashamed of being a brony and let the rest of us, the ones not ashamed and willing to say so, do what we want to do. I think it’s great for a fandom to thank the show’s creators, and then show off how this group has helped so many. Whether it’s personal stories or through charities.

    • Can’t be ashamed of being a brony when you’re not one. That word was a joke until /b/ got a hold of it.

I honestly have a bad feeling about this…

Great idea, only one thing. Most of the people watching the hub are kids. If a bunch of guys with beards start talking about how much they love my little pony… I really don’t know. I had a point but within the time it took me to type that I forgot it.

Who cares how people spend their money
Is this better then the 4,000 dollar Fursuits?
Nearly every single dollar ever used by nearly every single first world resident ever, has been spent sub-optimally from the prospective of improving the world.
And not just our money. How could we sit around watching cartoons or playing on the internet, when we should be out doing volunteer work?
No offense, but sitting around in a comfortable seat, in a climate controlled building, bitching(on the internet) about how other people are wasting their time and money instead of fixing the world, is, at a minimal, ridiculously hypocritical

I’m certainly in the bad idea crowd.
The staff knows we appreciate them and the target audience doesn’t need to know a bunch of grown men watch the show.

that’s just a big waste of money.

bronies are good making videos and I think It could be good, I don’t care if kids and their moms watch it too if the video is good they might even like it, but the truth is that it’s not about showing the world that we exist, it’s about thanking for the show that we love.

I’ve been thinking of another option, — How about the bronies making all this, rent a movie theater, they invite all the staff members and show them a very good movie, and after that we show them a 30min video thanking them for the show and showing them the fandom and the things we make, music, art and all that stuff, and with that amount of money we can even pay for food, drinks and decorate the place and bring together the ones that are traveling all the time like tara strong. <<—instead of a 30-second thank-you commercial.

This could be a brilliant idea. And the guy’s said himself after a certain point the rest can go to charity.

Unfortunately I’m not one to donate to charity but that’s just because I don’t have much of an income myself.

If people want to show their appreciation of the staff in this manner and it works out alright then sure let them do it. There’s certainly worse ways of spending your money.
