The Muffin Theater Presents: Rescue at Midnight Castle

As we close out the 4th season of the G4 My Little Pony television series, new fans were introduced to the darkest villain known to all generations of ponies, and the god father of all villains, and of course old fans saw a familiar face reborn for a new generation.  Tirac first appeared in the G1 My Little Pony television special Rescue at Midnight Castle.  The special was only twenty two minutes long and was also considered the concept and pilot episode for the G1 MLP television series.  It aired on April 14th 1984.

The story begins as the peaceful ponies of Dream Valley are attacked by monsters, who kidnap several ponies and take them away to Midnight Castle. Enraged, Firefly, a Pegasus pony, takes to the skies to try to find someone who can help them defeat Tirac, whose plan is to use these ponies to pull his chariot of darkness. On her way, she crashes into Megan’s well and asks her for her help. Megan is at first reluctant to go but after being confronted by the monsters, she sets out with the ponies to rescue them.

While the G4 Tirac is basically sucking the life force out of the citizens of Equestria, G1 Tirac just wanted to turn all the ponies into dragons to pull his pimp ride and conquer the lands.  While there isn’t any Dragonball Z like battles the special is pretty dark and grim, even for a kids show.  I do believe it was officially declared so by Hasbro after airing on television, and thus the darkness seen here was changed out for what appears in the original series.  If you have never watched it, it is definitely a must for G4 fans and actually was pretty traditional back in the very early days where we’d gather in Synchtube and watch this, and the My Little Pony: The Movie from 1986.
